Summer 2018 #10- September 24, 2018

Rocky Mountain National Park

Being on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park in Grand Lake we had the opportunity to hike several trails that we had not hiked before on several previous trips to this area. On the hike to Green Mountain the trail passes along marshy Big Meadow where, to our surprise we spotted buried in the tall grasses very small blue gentian in bloom but no browsing moose or elk. Even though Colorado is experiencing a very dry summer the Adams Falls cascade had a moderate flow from the small lakes in the meadows above.

Copper Mountain ski area, where we had skied in the past is in the process of replacing two of the major ski lifts. As of early September they were now pouring concrete for the lift towers which, along with cables and chairs, are waiting at the base to be assembled.

As part of Copper Mountain’s summer activities program, an obstacle course called WRECK Tangle was constructed in Copper Center.  This course of ten challenges is a smaller version of the course run on the TV program America Ninja Warriors (ANW).

We watched the younger warriors, ages 5 – 12 compete on this course as they were encouraged by ANW’s Jesse “Flex” Labreck and Jonathan Horton, both of whom we have watched compete on the TV program. Later in the day the older warriors were scheduled to compete.

Hiking near Frisco is very challenging due to the altitude which in the Dillion valley is over 9000 feet. We really felt it on the several short walks up into the mountain valleys and along the ridge from Loveland Pass.

Missouri Star Quilt Co

The Disneyland of Quilting

Be amazed – 12 quilting supply stores in one town – Hamilton, MO. Each shop specializes in a different array of fabrics – florals, kid, batik, novelty prints, etc. plus a retreat center for both sewing and sleeping. Both brick-and-mortar sales and online orders contribute to an annual revenue of $40 million. And it all started with a quilting tutorial on You Tube in 2009.

A Journey through History

The Abraham Lincoln Museum and Library in Springfield, Ill presents the life of Abraham Lincoln in two parts – pre-presidential years and the White House years using original artifacts in “you-are-there” settings and special effects theaters. Most impressive is the moving map showing the progression of the Civil War from 1860 - 1865 with major battles exploding on the screen and the boundaries of Union and Confederate territory moving throughout the war.

Hurricane Florence

As we continued driving east Hurricane Florence was moving slowly toward the mid-Atlantic coast with the prediction for it to cross our path in Pennsylvania and New Jersey with heavy rains. Therefore we increased our daily mileage and arrived home before the weather worsened. Traveling just over 10,000 miles, we certainly did enjoy a huge part of both Canada and the United States.
